Tory Burch used to be the wife of a multimillionaire, but following divorce she built her own fortune in the fashion industry. In the course of several years her company has grown into a veritable empire with boutiques and outlets in major department stores all over the world and uncountable celebrity clients.
Tory, you created your brand after bringing up 3 children. What was behind your decision?
I worked for 13 years in the fashion industry, but when I gave birth to my third son, I decided to take a break. At the same time I was thinking a lot about what I wanted to do with my life and whether I could start my own fashion company. Clothes prices were rising steeply and I realized what was missing from the market – beautiful things that are of high quality but don’t cost the earth. In 2004 I launched my own brand based on this idea.
How did you end up in the fashion industry?
After university I got work as assistant to the designer Zoran. Then I worked for Harper’s Bazaar; and for the advertising departments of Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Narciso Rodriguez, and Loewe. I didn’t train as a designer and sometimes, of course, I want to sketch something, but am unable to do so. On the other hand, I’m always able to explain my vision.
What kind of fashion clothes do you wear yourself?
I love mixing things in a masculine style with feminine silhouettes. I’m also fond of unexpected combinations of colors and prints.
How would you describe the Tory Burch style?
I create clothes in a classic American casual style, but dilute them with elements from other cultures – which is only natural, since I’m always traveling. My clothes are everyday wear; and they suit almost everyone.
