Is It Important for Minerals to Be Present in Drinking Water

It recommended that adults should drink at least 2-3 litres of water every day. Water is one of the most important components of the human body. Athletes and gym enthusiasts drink up to 6 litres of water to keep their body hydrated and in shape. It’s necessary that the water you drink has all the needed minerals in the right quantities.

A good water filter machine removes all the pollutants and retains essential minerals in drinking water. This is done using a special controller that maintains the TDS value. TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids, which means the amount of solids dissolved in the water. To maintain the pH value and TDS value of water, we use RO water purifiers. Calcium (Ca):

Magnesium (Mg):

Some parts of Magnesium are also found in drinking water. Magnesium is responsible for supporting the immune system of your body. It also increases the turnover of blood cells. It is one of the most important minerals in terms of metabolic functions, nervous activity and muscular activity. This is why fitness experts recommend water for weight loss. As calcium is responsible for contraction of muscles, magnesium takes care of the relaxation and both of these are really important for our proper daily movement.

Sodium (Na):

Sodium is the most important mineral in drinking water. It balances the level of water and electrolytes in the human body. Important human systems like cardiac system and nervous system require sodium for functioning properly. The amount of sodium shouldn’t be in excess as we take sodium in our diet as well. Excess sodium can lead to health hazards like hypertension, while deficiency of sodium can lead to memory loss, heart problems, delirium, dementia, amnesia and many other fatal diseases/disorders.

Potassium (K):

Potassium is another highly important mineral that is present in mineral water. It is responsible for providing energy to the cells. Without energy, the body wouldn’t function and potassium is the reason why all the cells get their energy. Our diet has potassium as well. Common sources of potassium are banana and drinking water. If this amount exceeds, it could reduce the metabolic function of a person and the human body might gain extra weight.

All these minerals are essential to the human body, but they shouldn’t exceed the permissible level or the results could be catastrophic. Bureau of Indian Standards has set the maximum acceptable mineral content in water. Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium and Potassium levels should not exceed 75mg/l, 30mg/l, 20mg/l and 31.1mg/l respectively in drinking water.
